Water sports and activities are perfect for those hot summer days, and visitors to Orihuela can enjoy an excellent selection within the municipality's coastal areas. Although Orihuela City lies inland, its municipality includes the beautiful Orihuela Costa. Add to that the superb sports marina in neighbouring Torrevieja, and you have a world of water sports within a short drive. Both Torrevieja and much of Orihuela Costa can be reached by car in under 40 minutes.
With the River Segura running through the centre of Orihuela City and the surrounding lakes, water sports are not just restricted to the sea. The city's riverfront is not really suitable for anything other than paddling around in a boat or kayak. However, further afield between the towns of Cieza and Blanca the river is perfect for white water rafting which we have covered in a separate article. Also in separate articles are the water sports available on Lake Pedrera.
Water Sports In Orihuela Costa
The entire stretch of coastline between Orihuela Costa's borders offer ideal conditions for a number of water sports and activities. The beautiful Blue Flag Award beaches have fun floating adventure playgrounds for the young ones. Speed boats take you soaring above the waves on parasails. Jet skis are an all time favourite with thrill seekers. Within some of the commercial areas there are several scuba diving operators. These offer ‘try scuba diving' sessions as well as all PADI certified courses. Finally, dotted among the beaches are areas of coves and cliffs. Here is where you will find keen snorkelers and local fishermen hoping to hook that big prize.
Water Sports In Torrevieja
As with Orihuela Costa, some of Torrevieja's more popular beaches feature floating adventure playgrounds. There are also some excellent snorkelling routes. One such route is surprisingly right in front Playa del Cura, the city's main urban beach. Deeper and more exciting routes though are found along the cliffs at the northern end of Los Locos Beach. Within the city's harbour are two marinas. Both of these offer several water sports options.
The closer marina is directly behind the Tourist Information Bureau. Here you will find the stylish Torrevieja Nautical Club. Sailing and fishing charters are available as well as a variety of sailing courses. This is also the location for flyboarding, parasailing and jet ski excursions. The further marina out along the pier is home to another yacht club. It's also the place to catch the thrilling Torrevieja Jet Boat. Finally, at the far end of this marina is La Bocana Cable Ski. This is great fun and can be enjoyed by most ages. Using a series of pulleys and cables, La Bocana enables participants to enjoy a number of water skiing disciplines including wake boarding.
